The picture shows a musician and a dancer running on stage. The figure of the dancer is a little blurred as it is caught in motion. It is a woman dressed in a grey shirt and blue trousers. She is moving in the front of the picture. In the back is a man playing a wind instrument.

Crossing Motion is a three-year research project in which we are developing knowledge about interdisciplinary co-production, or cross-artistic co-creation. The art forms in Crossing Motion are mainly music and dance. The project explores existing hierarchies, power shifts and the transfer of ownership in the process to all participants in the co-creation. A researcher follows the work. The project aims to develop, challenge and enable new types of co-production where inclusion and co-creation within cross-artistic work is in focus. Crossing Motion is carried out in collaboration with Västmanlandsmusiken and Stockholm University of the Arts, with support from the Swedish Arts Council. The main owner of the project is Culture and Development/Dance, Region Jönköping County.

Interdisciplinary artistic lab at Västerås Concert Hall 2019

During the first lab of the project, ShareMusic’s dance ensemble Work participated with musicians from Elefantöra and the Västerås Sinfonietta, together with a dancer from Candoco Dance Company in London. Charlotte Darbyshire, choreographer and artistic director of the company, led the lab with musician Jonas Jonasson from the Swedish rock band Bob hund.

During the first lab, it became clear what synergy, exchange and interaction is created when several art forms meet on equal terms in a co-creation. Everyone experienced a new way of relating to their creative process, their instruments, their body and the space.

Hybrid lab in Västerås 2020

During 2020, Crossing Motion was heavily affected by the pandemic, but we were able to conduct one lab with the help of digital technology. Participants were the same dancers and the musicians from the Västerås Sinfonietta. Jonas Jonasson led the lab on site with Charlotte Darbyshire and choreographer Wagner Moreira at a distance. Dance lab in Stockholm 2021

Since the project is dependent on the participants meeting in the same room, the project was postponed. During 2021, one lab was performed in Stockholm in spite of present restrictions. Previously, the dancers had been working interdisciplinary with musicians, but this time they had full focus on dance together with a new choreographer. The dancers got to explore power hierarchies and the transfer of ownership with choreographer Helena Franzén who has nearly 30 years of experience in the dance world. Through this link, you find an article about this lab, written by Alexander Lärkmo in 2021.
