Om Remote Performance

Remote Performance är ett innovativt projekt som genomförs hösten 2022 i syfte att skapa och utforska en digital miljö där människor, oavsett funktionsförmåga, kan vara musikaliskt kreativa tillsammans på distans och även uppträda för publik. Med hjälp av sensorer, avatarer och biologisk modulering av musikdata skapas förutsättningar för deltagarna att kommunicera medvetandetillstånd, sinne och kropp och därigenom uppnå en maximal verklighetskänsla och ett personligt kommunikativt "här och nu".  

ShareMusic har inlett ett samarbete med Stanford University (USA) kring reducering av så kallad latency – ett nytt och tekniskt avancerat forskningsområde. Latency, eller fördröjning, utgör idag ett av de största hindren för att kunna musicera i realtid via internet. Det unika med Remote Performance är att det utformas med inkludering och tillgänglighet i fokus och att användaren ska kunna medverka hemifrån med egen utrustning utan krav på högteknologisk specialhårdvara.

Remote Performance är tänkt att fungera som en digital plattform där kommunikationsteknik, sensorer (som mäter puls, hjärtfrekvensvariabilitet, andning, elektrisk hjärnaktivitet (EEG)) och algoritmer bidrar till att minska fördröjningen och förbättra det kreativa "nuvarande ögonblicket". Inom ramen för denna satsning har ShareMusic även påbörjat ett samarbete med X-System Ltd (UK) inom sensorteknologier, analys och förutsägelse av musikaliska känslor. Projektets musiker spelar en central roll när de utforskar, testar och utmanar den nya tekniken som ska tillåta dem att skapa eller modulera musik och ljud direkt genom sina tankar och känslor.

Remote Performance avslutas med ett residens på Inter Arts Center i Malmö i slutet av oktober. I samband med residenset genomförs en så kallad sharing där musikerna befinner sig på olika orter i Skåne medan publiken fysiskt finns på Inter Arts Center i Malmö. Mer information om detta kommer längre fram.

Medverkande

Vid projektpresentationen medverkar Nigel Osborne, Chief Technology Officer vid X-System Ltd, och en representant från Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) vid Stanford University. De kommer att ge en bakgrundsbeskrivning, sätta projektet i ett sammanhang, samt förklara tekniken som ingår i och möjliggör projektet.

Project presentation – Remote Performance

On Wednesday September 7 at 6.00–7.00 PM (CEST) you’re welcome to participate in a digital presentation of ShareMusic’s project Remote Performance.

This is a unique opportunity to get an insight to the start-up of an innovative, technology-intensive project about digital co-creation of music. Follow the work from the beginning through a digital introduction to what the project conveys, who it is for, and not the least what it can lead to!

Remote Performance is an innovative project that will be conducted during the autumn of 2022 with the aim to create and explore a digital environment where people, regardless their ability, can be creative together from a distance and, also, perform for an audience. Using sensors, avatars and biological modulation of music data, conditions are created for the participants to communicate a state of consciousness, mind, and body. Through that, they will achieve a maximum sense of reality and a personally communicative “here and now.”

Participants

At the project presentation, Nigel Osborne, Chief Technology Officer at X-System Ltd, and a representative from Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University will be participating. They will give a description of the background, put the project into its context, and explain the technology that is part of the project and what makes the work possible.

More about Remote Performance

ShareMusic has initiated a collaboration with Stanford University (USA) concerning reduction of so-called latency – a new and technologically advanced research area. Latency, or delay, is today one of the largest obstacles for creating music in real time via internet. The uniqueness of Remote Performance is that it is formed with inclusion and accessibility in focus and that users will be able to participate from home with their own equipment, without any demands on high-tech specialty hardware.

Remote Performance is meant to work as a digital platform where communication technology, sensors (that measures pulse, heart rate variability, breathing, electrical brain activity (EEG)) and algorithms that contribute to reduce the latency and improve the creative “present moment”. Within the frame of this initiative, ShareMusic has also started to collaborate with X-System Ltd (UK) concerning sensor technology, analysis, and prediction of musical emotion. The musicians of the project play a crucial part as they explore, test, and challenge the new technology aimed to allow them to create or modulate music and sound directly through their thoughts and emotions.

Remote Performance will be finalised with a residency at Inter Arts Center in Malmö by the end of October. In connection to the residency, a so-called sharing will be conducted where the musicians will be situated on different locations around Skåne and the audience will be physically located at Inter Arts Center in Malmö. Remote Performance is part of a specialized initiative where Region Skåne and Inter Arts Center at Lund’s University (IAC) wish to contribute to increased conditions for artistic creation through technical solutions, digital tools, and artistic method development.
